Ummm...yeah...large file size...XD;; Sorry about that...

SO. I stayed up to finish the story part. It's now...3:16 AM. I'll probably be comatose for most of the day...

The house just seemed too quiet. Even though Bodhan and Sandal were going about their daily business downstairs and Orana was neatening Hawke's room, the only sounds that could be heard in the study were the crackle of the fire, the patter of sleet against the window, and the scratch of a quill on parchment. Pausing, Anders looked up from his writing to listen for sounds of Hawke returning from...whatever it was she was doing. All the mage knew was that she had told him he had free run of the estate while she was away, and that was a few days ago...He'd be lying if he said he wasn't worried. But Justice had pushed to take advantage of the petite fighter's absence to get some work done, so instead of trying to find his lover, Anders was writing his manifesto for mage freedom.

With a shake of his head, the blond mage returned to his writing. He was almost done...Tomorrow, he'd be free to look for his lover. Even though most of his attention was taken up by his writing, there was still a part of him that worried about the bright-eyed young woman who had him wrapped around her perpetually bandaged finger. Perhaps it was this part of him that heard the front door close, but he didn't look up until a series of crashes rang through the estate. "...Lyra?" he called with a mixture of hope and worry. When there was no response, Anders frowned and pushed himself up out of his seat, heading for the room he'd been sharing off and on with Hawke for the past year. "Lyra?"

Whatever Anders had expected to see was very different from what met his eyes when he opened the door to his lover's chambers. The normally cluttered desk was cleared, the papers, books, quills, and ink bottles scattered on the floor, the young woman's armour was strewn across the floor, and Lyra herself...

"Oh Lyra..." he breathed, rushing forward to crouch by the crumpled form of his lover. His callused hand was gentle in brushing back the soft black hair that he'd caressed so many times in this past year, the touch pushing Justice back farther for the moment. Lyra needed him, this much was clear in the bleakness shadowing her eyes, the drying blood on her cracked lips. Strong arms wrapped around the petite woman as Anders settled down on the floor and pulled her close. "Are you hurt? What happened?"

For a few minutes, the mage thought Hawke wouldn't respond, but she finally forced out in a husky, emotion-thickened voice, "Do you know how many escaped mages thought I was working for the Templars? Do you know...how many mages turned to blood magic?"

Anders sucked in a harsh breath, the part of him that was Justice seething to deal with the Templars who drove mages to such foolishness. No...now wasn't the time. Gently, he kissed the top of his lover's hair and hugged her close. "You had no choice...They had turned to blood magic and were beyond your help or reasoning."

"The worst part..." She laughed shortly and buried her face in Anders' chest. "The worst part is...Knight-Captain Cullen asked me what happened. He was worried about me when I came in through the Gallows. You know what he said when I told him I had dealt with attacks from blood mages?" Bright blue eyes dimmed with bitterness lifted to meet sad, sympathetic amber ones as Lyra whispered, "He apologised for his men not being more thorough, and thanked me for the help. A man whom I have come to view as a sort of friend...looked at me with awe and respect, and thanked me. As if I were some sort of...tireless hero."

His heart breaking at her misery, Anders shook his head and brushed back Hawke's chocolate-black hair as he kissed her softly. "You are a hero. But you are also a woman. Lyra Amell Hawke. Friend. Companion. Lover. Beloved. And I'm here for you. Always."

Dragon Age 2 and associated content belong to Bioware. Door texture is by :iconcloaks:, and the pose for the last panel is referenced from this stock photo. Lyra incarnation of Hawke is mine. Song that inspired this is "Save The Hero" from Beyonce's album "I Am Sasha Fierce".
