It Hurts Me
He had just had the worst attack yet. No reassuring smiles from him, no feeble attempt to tell me that he was going to be fine. He had no breath to smile or talk, he just lay there, unconscious. His once powerful, comforting form was now so weak.
I took a deep breath, trying to pull myself together. For our family and friends, I had to be strong. But it hurt me to see him lying there, a shadow of his former self. He was just skin and bones, and looking at him made you marvel that he was still alive. If it wasn’t for his shallow breathing, you might think that he was dead.
I knew that the medics were doing their best, but I couldn’t help but feel like my strength was being sucked away by my very helplessness. When I slowly opened the door to his room, I tried not to flinch at his utter paleness. It tore me up inside so much to see him so weak. As I collapsed into the chair next to the bed, I couldn’t help but wish that I knew what to do to help him.
He’d been unconscious for so long…if he never woke up, I didn’t know what I’d do. It terrified me more than anything that I’d faced before.
“Shunsui?” he asked hoarsely, softly.
“Sorry to disappoint you, Shiro-chan,” I said as soothingly as I could, and smiled tremulously. His eyes opened for a moment, and he looked at me with a slight smile on his pale face.
“You could never disappoint me, Koneko-chan,” he replied in a voice barely louder than a whisper.
No matter how hard it was, I’d stay with him always. No matter how much it hurt me to see him in so much pain…

Took a little break from my poetry typing, and started listening to "Save You" by Simple Plan. Needless to say, I began feeling a little melancholy, and started thinking about how bits of it applied to Jushiro Ukitake...and wrote this little excerpt. If you read my version of
